Treatment by acupunctureStruggling with chronic pain? Acupuncture just might be the answer.

Unlike common misunderstandings around what it feels like, sensations from the needles range from nothing at all to a slight pricking sensation, and tingling or warmth during treatment.

It can help, with results substantiated by the more than three million Americans who receive acupuncture treatments each year for a wide range of conditions.

Acupuncture isn’t limited to treatment for chronic pain. It’s been used for 2,000+ years to treat all kinds of health issues – insomnia, bladder issues, digestive problems, infertility, emotional and mental issues, and more. Even the World Health Organization endorses it as a valid treatment, with the U.S. offering more than 11,000 licensed acupuncturists in practice, including about 3,500 physicians.

Acupuncture is typically offered in a quiet, comfortable setting, often with the patient lying on a massage table. Single-use, sterilized needles are inserted and left in place for 20-30 minutes, with the average number of sessions ranging from 5-10 sessions.

How Does It Work?

There are two schools of thought for acupuncture, each distinctive yet supporting its powerful benefits.

The modern Western perspective believes acupuncture stimulates the nervous system, along with multiple areas of the brain such as the hypothalamus and pituitary gland. It improves circulation, regulates hormones, reduces inflammation and pain, and strengthens the immune system.

Eastern perspectives on acupuncture believe the human body has channels (meridians) serving as pathways for blood circulation, body fluids and energy flow (qi – pronounced “chee”). Inserting hair-thin needles into specific points of the body aligned with those meridians can clear blockages or imbalances of the meridians and restore flow, leading to healing and positive change within the body.

It’s often not covered by insurance, although coverage is increasing as insurance companies begin to understand its benefits, and private pay costs can vary. At the Sun Health Center for Health and Well-Being in Surprise, AZ, initial acupuncture sessions are $90 and follow-up sessions are $70.
