Sun Health Receives CDC Full Plus Recognition For Diabetes Prevention Program

Sun Health was recently recognized by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for the impact of its National Diabetes Prevention Program. This recognition stems from ongoing work to help those at risk to make necessary nutritional, physical activity and behavioral changes to improve health and prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes. “It is a true honor to be recognized by the CDC for our pre-diabetes prevention program,” said Sun Health president Joseph La Rue. “This remarkable accomplishment demonstrates the quality of work we do to ensure success and better health outcomes in patients with a pre-disposition or risk for developing type 2 diabetes.” The CDC Full Plus Recognition is awarded to programs across the country that have demonstrated their effectiveness through meeting all performance criteria set forth in the CDC Diabetes Prevention Recognition Program, including the ability to demonstrate the reduction of risk of developing type 2 diabetes among those who complete their respective programs. Sun Health’s Diabetes Prevention Program is a year-long, staggered program consisting of 24 class sessions where participants will keep weight and activity logs, reflect on the previous week, explore new lifestyle topics, and create an action plan. The first six months of the program focus on weight reduction and increasing physical activity, while the second six months of the program focus on maintaining weight loss and activity levels. The Diabetes Prevention Program is just one of many resources Sun Health offers in an effort to tackle some of the most common health concerns among local communities. These include wellness and consultation services, LiveWell Learning On-Demand, and a variety of classes and events, including the upcoming 7th Annual Diabetes Expo taking place on November 8 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Grandview Terrace Ballroom, located at 14515 W. Sun Health Foundation Announces the Warren D. Ruff Scholarship Fund

Sun Health Foundation Announces the Warren D. Ruff Scholarship Fund Continuing a Legacy of Learning, Personal Growth, and Caring for Others SURPRISE, AZ (March 27, 2020) – Sun Health Foundation proudly announces the establishment of the Warren D. Ruff Scholarship Fund for qualifying nurses and nursing candidates – at a time when it’s needed most to support our nursing workforce. Scholarship priority, but not exclusivity, will be given to applicants at Sun Health, Banner Boswell and Banner Del E. Webb medical centers who wish to pursue or further a career in nursing or nursing-related health professions. Scholarship applications are currently being accepted from April 1, 2020 through May 1, 2020. The Warren D. Ruff Scholarship Fund, totaling $6.4 million, was established (with the intent that 5% will be awarded each year) to open new doors of opportunity for these candidates to pursue their passion and help fill the critical need for more trained nurses and nursing-related health professionals who live and work in Arizona. Because of the exceptional care he received, Mr. Ruff desired that the primary purpose of the scholarship be to supply nurses to Arizona. During the last decade of his life, Mr. Ruff was deeply grateful to the former Sun Health Boswell and Del E. Webb hospitals and people who delivered this care, and they became endeared to him. “Sun Health Foundation is honored to be the steward of Mr. Ruff’s legacy of learning, personal growth, and caring for others. This legacy will live on through the generations because of his support of nursing and nursing-related healthcare profession scholarships,” said Gina W. Ore, Chief Philanthropy Officer. “The word ‘generosity’ truly defines Mr. Ruff’s life,” Ms. Ore added. “He was greatly admired in the community and throughout Sun Health for his integrity, compassion, and for being a true

Employee Wellness Program ‘Threepeats’ Platinum Award

In March, Sun Health was recognized by the Healthy Arizona Worksite Program (HAWP) for achieving the Platinum Level of excellence in worksite and community wellness. “The platinum award is the HAWP’s highest award and it’s the third year in a row that we’ve earned it, so we’re very excited,” said Rhonda Zonoozi, exercise physiologist and co-coordinator of Sun Health’s employee wellness program. Yelitza Silva, director of Total Compensation for Sun Health, is the other coordinator. The Healthy Arizona Worksite Award recognizes employers who positively affect the health and well-being of their employees, their families and their community by implementing comprehensive worksite and community wellness strategies. The Platinum Level award honors businesses making an impact both inside and outside the organization by addressing one or more of the health challenges impacting communities across the state. Sun Health’s annual Diabetes Expo, which began in 2014 and most recently drew 200 community members, was cited on Sun Health’s nomination as an example of the organization’s commitment to community wellness. “Well-run wellness programs have been shown to improve overall health and reduce health care costs, not just for employees of health care organizations but also for the communities they serve,” Yelitza said. Rhonda and Yelitza also credit Sun Health’s wellness champions – employees who promote wellness at their individual Sun Health worksites – for helping the organization reach the platinum plateau. The Platinum Award will be presented to Sun Health on May 1 at Healthy Arizona Worksite’s annual awards event.

Sun Health’s Diabetes Prevention Program earns full recognition from CDC

SURPRISE, ARIZ., Oct. 30, 2018 – Sun Health’s diabetes prevention course has earned “full recognition” from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), making it the first in-person National Diabetes Prevention Program (NDPP) in Arizona to receive this designation. “Our diabetes educators have helped hundreds of people reduce their risk of developing type 2 diabetes. We are proud to be one of the first programs in the state to receive full recognition status,” says Jennifer Drago, executive vice president of Population Health at Sun Health. Full recognition takes on added importance because Medicare recently began covering the NDPP as a benefit for Medicare patients already diagnosed with prediabetes. Sun Health has offered the CDC curriculum for prediabetes for several years. Classes are taught by an exercise physiologist who also is a certified health coach and two certified diabetes educators/registered dietitian nutritionists. Developed by the CDC, the NDPP is a lifestyle-change and education program designed for those at risk for, or already diagnosed with, prediabetes. It’s clinically proven to cut the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by more than half. The CDC reports that a weight loss of five to seven percent of body weight — for example, 10 to 14 pounds for a 200-pound person — can reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 58 percent. In adults over 65, it’s been shown to reduce the risk by 71 percent. To earn full recognition, NDPP providers must meet rigorous CDC standards based on an organization’s curriculum, number of participants entering the program with a qualifying blood test, participant engagement and success in meeting weight loss goals. Learn more at sunhealthwellbeing.org/diabetes-prevention or call (623) 832-WELL (9355). Upcoming NDPP Series Class Dates for 2019 Starting Monday, Jan. 7, 9 to 10 a.m. Banner Boswell Medical Center Support Services

Care Transitions Program Highlighted on National Stage

SURPRISE, ARIZ. – May 5, 2016 – Registered nurse case manager Brittany Eads and executive vice president Jennifer Drago highlighted Sun Health’s successful Care Transitions program with a presentation at the 9th Annual Orthopedic and Spine Summit held April 27-29, in Chicago. The talk was titled “Minimizing Costs in the Post-Acute Environment Through Effective Transitions of Care.” Major changes are taking place in orthopedic care for Medicare patients, including a greater emphasis on managing orthopedic surgery patients from a quality and cost standpoint, two areas in which Sun Health’s Care Transitions program has excelled. “Twenty to 25 percent of the patients we currently manage have had orthopedic surgeries such as hip and knee replacements, so we are very skilled at managing them and understanding what their challenges are going to be,” said Drago, who directs Population Health for nonprofit Sun Health. Eads worked for years as a nurse on the orthopedic floor at Banner Boswell Medical Center before she joined Sun Health’s Care Transitions team. “During the talk, we were able to give actual examples and case studies of things that have happened to orthopedic patients in our program and to share the lessons we’ve learned,” Eads said. On April 1, 2016, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) rolled out mandatory bundled payments for hip and knee replacements, the most common inpatient surgeries for Medicare beneficiaries. Hospitals and doctors in 67 regions (not yet including Arizona) are now at risk for all Medicare spending for hip and knee replacements. Under bundled payments, hospitals where the surgery takes place will be accountable for the quality and the costs of care from the start of surgery through 90 days following discharge. “If providers do a good job helping the patient recover and they manage the costs, they presumably will share
