Massage for Better Health

Samantha Blaine enjoys an active life in Sun City West and wants to do what she can to keep health issues from slowing her down.

For her, massage therapy through Sun Health’s Center for Health & Wellbeing is one of the “tools in the tool kit for health.”

“As we all age, we have problems that crop up,” she said. “I’ve been having recent issues with tendonitis, edema and plantar fasciitis, conditions that are familiar to many seniors.”

At her doctor’s recommendation, Samantha initially tried physical therapy, and the procedure that always had the most impact was the massage offered by her therapist. At the gym whirlpool, she also noticed that the pressure of the jets against her feet and legs improved circulation.

As luck would have it, Samantha was volunteering at a community event where Sun Health was represented and offering free 10-minute massages. The idea of incorporating regular massages into her life through Sun Health, a familiar and trusted organization, just felt right.

“With the Sun Health family, you can have confidence in the therapeutic massage services” she said, “You know that the procedures are medically based and safe, offered in a safe environment.”

“Then I discovered Sun Health, I thought ‘This is what I’ve been looking for’,” she said.

Samantha worked with her therapist Sally Springs on a tailored massage plan.

“Sally knows what the issues are and what will help.” she said. “She’s cognizant of what I’m trying to achieve.”

“Perhaps many people have a preconceived idea of what therapeutic massage is,” she said. ““It’s not a matter of only coming in to get a full-body massage. Massage can be very, very specific to a particular condition.” You can dictate what you want done. In my case, a lot of the massages I get are to increase circulation in my legs and feet.”

She said she has seen some improvement, particularly with the goal to increase circulation in her legs. When she notices issues with her shoulders – the result of long stretches reading in bed – Sally helps massage those kinks out.

Samantha tries to get massages weekly.  She is always on lookout for Sun Health’s special package offerings that make massage affordable, about $45.00 for an hour session.

In recommending massage therapy to others, Samantha suggests working with the therapist to really target problem areas.

“If you’ve got very specific issues or complaints, there’s a massage that can match what your needs are,” she said. Whether that’s a long-term condition or a new kink, massage can be so beneficial, Samantha said.

“It’s therapeutic,” she said. “It’s something that I do for myself where I absolutely feel better.”
